First Flood of 2010

From Getting Ready For The Big Storms to The Big Storms Are Here!!

Today, Wednesday, January 20, 2010, we had our first flood.  And it came with a bang!  After working the morning, I left at 11:30 a.m. and took pictures of the creek, which was just coming over the banks.  40 minutes later, Debbie called me and said we were flooded!  The following pictures were before some nasty downpours that occurred later in the afternoon. The City of Corning was great in coming out with sand bags for the shelter doors and helping wherever they could.

We are all concerned about what we will find when the water recedes.  Our fingers are crossed that the outside fencing for the play yard and pens won’t be damaged beyond repair. All the dogs are inside the shelter, with some in crates as there are not enough pens for all of them.

Big flood

We got to see the damage first hand today, on a visit with Debbie. What a mess. We couldn't believe how high the water had gotten. We weren't even aware the creek was that close to the shelter. Though the reeds should've been a dead give away. But dead grasses and debris were hanging in all of the fences. What a scary place Corning chose to place their Animal Shelter. Stunning, really. And now the dogs will be stuck inside, until.......??? Except for their daily outings. What heroes, both the two-legged and the four-legged ones that have to deal with these severe conditions year after year. Something needs to be done!! To keep Debbie and her charges safe and dry!!!

Yup, first flood. Although

Yup, first flood. Although the city comes out every year to have me evacuate as the shelter caretaker, when the dogs can't come and they say they will be fine, then, I will be fine too. So far that's been true. Sometimes scary but we've made it through for almost 8 years. All the dogs are currently inside the shelter. One dog is in a crate because we don't have a kennel available. The dogs still get their outside time twice a day. Funny, they will potty with water up to their waist without batting an eye. What resiliency.

First flood of 2010?

When you say "First flood", does that mean there are more expected? Does your shelter go thru this every year? If so then your efforts for ensuring the safety and comfort of the dogs is worth a medal. I can't believe the hardship involved here in protecting the trusting dogs in your care. You're a saint!
