Certain dogs touch our hearts more than others. Weaver was one of those dogs. He came into the shelter in January 08 when storms slammed California. Storms also slammed Weaver and he came in on 01/04/08 with a dangling leg broken in 4 places. But something about him was special. As he was lifted out of the animal control truck his tail wagged and has never stopped wagging since. "A young boy, this one's worth the medical intervention," we thought. And so our "Weaver Medical Fund" came about.
Weaver's back leg was amputated but it never put a damper on his spirit. He was transferred to a sister shelter in Redding, CA several months later and was immediately adopted. Three months later, Weaver was brought back. Living with 3 very small children, he was just a bit overwhelmed. Weaver came back to us and settled back in to the shelter routine. But life in a shelter is no life at all. When another sister shelter in Chico, CA called us in 10/08 and said they would like to have Weaver we were delighted.
But Weaver stayed, and stayed, and stayed. He was featured on a billboard, he was featured on TV, he was the delight of the shelter staff who took turns having Weaver at their side. But no one seemed to want to adopt him.
Gretchen and Alvin Muller went to Butte Humane Society looking at another dog. Weaver looked longingly at them. They took a closer look at him but then said their goodbye to him. An hour later they came back and said there was something special about Weaver and wanted to spend some time with him.
"This is the dog we've been searching for," says Gretchen. "We never think about him having only 3 legs. He's not handicapped one bit. In fact, he chases rabbits as if he has 5 legs!"
Gretchen and Weaver paid a visit to Second Chance Pet Rescue recently where we had a wonderful reunion. Home at last. Where all dogs should be.
