Space Race

| It is always a race for space at the shelter. We race to partner up dogs, race to find the right homes for them and race to make sure there is an open pen available for next dog that comes through the door. Always racing. |

Lost, abandoned, and surrendered dogs; if they were picked up in the city limits of Corning, all end up here at the Corning Animal Shelter, in the care of Second Chance Pet Rescue. We don’t need to listen to the politicians to hear how economically bad things still are, we only have to look at the overwhelming number of dogs that are in our pens here. And people just aren’t adopting dogs like they used to when times were much better. We have more dogs in our care than we have pen space to keep them in. While it would seem easy to an outsider to say to put the little dogs together in the same pen, we have to consider that even though a small male and female dog get along great, if they are not spayed or neutered, it could lead to unwanted behavior with major consequences! Thanks to Colleen Lewis, who donated a 3 tier mobile crate system, we are able to get the little dogs off the concrete floors and out of the solitary confinement pens, and put them in their own little apartment where they can feel secure and are able to see what is going on around them. The crates can be used for up to 6 small dogs if needed, but we prefer the dogs to have a bigger space if possible by removing the divider. The challenge in finding more pen space in the shelter is ongoing, along with the challenge of finding new ways to get the word out about the dogs waiting for new forever homes. One problem, not enough pen space, alleviated the race for space thanks to Colleen for now. The 2nd problem, Second Chance is working on is looking for new and innovative ways of finding homes for the dogs in our care. If you can be a temporary foster home give us a call at 530-824-1985. |
